How Many Packs of Laminate Do I Need? Coverage & Waste Explained

The coverage-and-waste formula for turning your room measurements into a pack count, with worked examples in both metres and feet.

How many packs of laminate you need comes down to one calculation. Measure the room's area, add a waste allowance — 5 to 10 percent for a simple straight-lay room, more for diagonal lays, patterns, or rooms with lots of obstacles — divide by the coverage printed on the pack, and always round up to whole packs. That gives you a solid, order-ready estimate in about a minute.

Below is the exact formula, two fully worked examples (one in metres, one in feet), and the handful of things that push your real number above the textbook one. One caveat up front: the formula gives you an estimate, and the pack count is only final once you've checked the coverage of the specific product you're buying, which we come back to further down.

The formula

packs = ceil( (room area × (1 + waste%)) ÷ pack coverage )

Room area — longest × widest for a simple rectangular room. For an L-shape, split it into rectangles, work out each one, and add them together.

Waste allowance — the extra you add for edge cuts, the odd broken plank, and mistakes. 5 to 10 percent covers a simple straight lay; go higher for diagonals, patterns, and awkward rooms.

Pack coverage — the floor area one pack covers, printed on the box, usually 1.6 to 2.5 m² (17 to 27 sq ft). It varies by product, so use the figure for the laminate you're actually buying.

Round up — you buy whole packs, so round the result up to the next whole number. 6.1 packs and 6.9 packs are both 7 packs.

Two Worked Examples

Same formula, run end to end, once in metric and once in feet. Watch the last line in each: the round-up is where most people trip up.

Metric: a 4.2m × 3.4m room

Pack coverage: 2.22 m²

Area: 4.2 × 3.4 = 14.28 m²

Add 8% waste: 14.28 × 1.08 = 15.42 m²

Divide by pack coverage: 15.42 ÷ 2.22 = 6.95

Round up: 6.95 packs is 7 packs — you can't buy 0.95 of a pack. Buy 7.

Imperial: a 14ft × 12ft room

Pack coverage: 19.6 sq ft

Area: 14 × 12 = 168 sq ft

Add 8% waste: 168 × 1.08 = 181.4 sq ft

Divide by pack coverage: 181.4 ÷ 19.6 = 9.26

Round up: 9.26 packs is 10 packs — round up to the next whole pack. Buy 10.

Notice how close both results sit to the pack below them: 6.95 and 9.26. Rounding up feels wasteful, but it's the whole point. You cannot lay 0.95 of a pack, and being a single pack short on install day is far more expensive than the leftover planks.

What Actually Changes Your Waste Number

The 8 percent in those examples is a middle-of-the-road figure for a plain room. Yours might be lower, but more often it's higher. Here's what moves it.

5–10% Typical waste allowance for a simple, straight-lay room. Diagonal lays, patterns, and obstacle-heavy rooms need more.

Room shape. A plain rectangle wastes the least. L-shapes, alcoves, and obstacles like kitchen islands or pillars mean more cut edges, and every cut edge is a potential offcut you can't reuse. The more broken-up the room, the higher your waste allowance should be.

Laying direction. A diagonal or 45-degree lay cuts every plank that meets a wall at an angle, which produces far more waste than a straight lay running parallel to the walls. Diagonal installs often need 15 percent or more.

Plank length versus room length. If your room length doesn't divide neatly by the plank length, the end piece of every row is a cut, and if the offcut is too short to start the next row, it becomes waste. Short end pieces quietly inflate your real pack count.

Stagger rules. Manufacturers specify a minimum stagger (often 300mm / 12″ or one-third of a plank) between the end joints of neighbouring rows. If your offcut is shorter than that minimum, you can't use it to start the next row, so you cut a fresh plank and the offcut is wasted.

First-project nerves. If it's your first laminate install, add a little extra. Miscuts happen, and a spare plank or two is far cheaper than a second trip to the shop.

Two practical habits save headaches later. Keep one spare pack from the same batch once the floor is down — laminate colour and finish can shift slightly between production batches, so a matching plank for a future repair is worth having. And before you overbuy "just in case," check the retailer's returns policy on unopened packs — many shops take them back, but clearance and special-order lines often can't be returned.

The formula gives an estimate, not a guarantee. Pack contents and coverage differ from product to product — one box might cover 1.76 m², another 2.5 m², with a different number of planks inside. The area maths gives you a reliable starting number, but your pack count is only real once you've confirmed the coverage (and pieces per pack) of the exact laminate you're buying. Never lock in a final pack count from room dimensions alone.

When Area Maths Isn't Enough: Simulate the Layout

Area plus a waste percentage is a solid estimate, but it treats the floor as a smooth surface to be covered. In reality you're laying rigid planks in rows, cutting the end of each row to fit, and reusing offcuts wherever they're long enough. Two rooms with identical square metres can need a different number of packs depending on how the planks fall.

That's the gap a laminate flooring calculator closes. Instead of dividing area by coverage, it simulates the layout row by row: it lays full planks across each row, cuts the end plank to fit, carries the offcut down to start the next row when it clears the minimum stagger, and totals the planks you actually need. The output is a cut list — exactly what to do with each plank — plus a pack count tied to your specific room rather than a rounded-up area figure.

When offcut reuse works well, waste drops sharply. You might cut 30 planks across the whole job but only send 5 or 6 to the skip; the rest become starters for the next row. Area maths can't see any of this, so it either overshoots (money in the garage) or undershoots (a trip back to the shop).

Stagger is the main reason offcuts go to waste. Say a room is 4,000mm (13 ft 1 in) long and the planks are 1,380mm (54⅜″). Each row takes two full planks plus a 1,240mm (4 ft 1 in) cut, leaving a 140mm (5½″) offcut — too short to start the next row under most 300mm minimums. So that offcut is wasted and you cut a fresh starter. Simulating the rows shows you this before you buy, and lets you nudge the starting offset until the waste settles down.

The area estimate is faster and perfectly fine for a plain rectangle. The layout simulation is what stops you over- or under-buying once the room gets more complicated, and the few extra minutes pay for themselves the first time you don't have to make an emergency trip to the flooring shop.

Buying Too Few vs Buying Too Many

Getting the pack count wrong goes one of two ways, and both are common.

One pack short. The classic. You reach the last row and the box is empty. If the product is in stock it's an annoying trip; if it's out of stock or discontinued, it's a real problem — and even the "same" laminate from a different batch can be a shade off. This is exactly why keeping a spare pack from the batch matters.

Three packs too many. The opposite, and the more expensive one. Measure area, tack on a flat 10 percent, round up per pack, and you can end up with two dozen planks you'll never lay. At $25 to $40 a pack that's real money sitting in the garage, and not every shop takes returns.

A last row that's a sliver. Start laying from one wall without checking and the final row can come out as a 30mm (1⅛″) strip — hard to fit cleanly and unflattering. The fix is to trim the first row so the last row lands wider, but that only helps if you spot it before the floor is down. Planning the layout catches it early.

How many packs of laminate you need starts with one formula: area, plus waste, divided by pack coverage, rounded up. That gets you an order-ready estimate in a minute, and the two worked examples above show it end to end.

Just remember the two guardrails. Confirm the coverage of the exact product before you commit, and — if the room is anything more than a plain rectangle — simulate the layout so offcut reuse and edge cuts are counted properly.
